Shopping Til I Drop: She’s Just Yelling About Kotex

walmrtshopHey all! Hope your St. Paddy’s Day was a good one. I successfully made an AWESOME batch of corned beef and cabbage. I’m not the most accomplished chef in the world, so pardon me whilst I toot my own horn for a second…

*toot, toot* 🙂

Hey, did you load up on Whoppers? Oh man, we sure did! My mother (she’s becoming my couponing partner in crime, I think) and I got up at the crack of dawn, and headed to the ol’ CVS. And it’s a good thing, too! I don’t know if the sale started the night before, or if they just never restocked the candy, but the candy section was WAAAAY ransacked.

I managed to find 8 bags of Whoppers, though, and we also picked up a PAAS egg coloring kit. We headed to the vitamin aisle to see if they had any Nature Made Vitamin D. I did the pricing beforehand on the CVS website, and thought I could get away with a small moneymaker with the coupons I had… but no such luck. Our store didn’t carry the super cheap bottles of vitamin D.

This is why I don’t string the deals together, I just write them down and follow them. 😉

We spent $7.25 out of pocket, but earned back $6.99 in Extra Care Bucks. So, not too shabby. Boyfriend and dad have been depleting the Whoppers already. I told sis I’d tuck a bag or two in her Easter stuff.

Turns out she hates Whoppers. Well, fudge.

We dropped by our local Kohl’s, which I hardly ever frequent. It’s a very nice store, which is part of the problem. I feel like I need to put on makeup, slacks, and a cardigan every time I set foot in there. But I had received $10 in free Kohl’s cash in my e-mail, and a 20% off any item pass. And I knew just how I was going to spend it:

She’s a Crock-Pot brand, 4 quart capacity, stainless steel, fully programmable slow cooker. I named her Norma… a name that came to me that morning while I brushed my teeth in a half-asleep fog. She was on sale for $19.99, but I walked out of Kohl’s spending less than $10. She currently lives in my closet, because the hope chest is full. And someday, she’ll help me cook another awesome corned beef. 😀

Sis and I went to Walmart this past Monday. I know, I know… I just got done bragging last time about how I don’t frequent the Walmart that often anymore. But I had posed a personal challenge to myself. I wanted to see if I could amass enough moneymakers to pay off my $9 prescription.

I was already working with limited coupons, since I had used a bunch on the last Walmart venture. I didn’t get the awesome $5 off 2 Neutrogena coupon in our paper (bummer). Plus, our store doesn’t carry the small packs of Goodnights mats, EcoTools poufs, OR the travel-sized bottles of L’Oreal shampoo.

Our biggest saving grace? Dog food. Our store happened to have the $1 Beneful pouches, which are awesome if you have the $2 off Beneful coupon from the 2/10 SmartSource. I grabbed 7 of ’em. We also picked up 4 boxes of the moneymaker kotex. I found the $1.14 Almay makeup removers and I had one last $5 off 2 Almay coupon. Woo! Last thing we grabbed? Burritos. Sis looked in the cart and said, “That’s the most random mix of stuff ever.”

I picked up my prescription, and to the checkout we went! I handed the cashier my coupons, and then she started scrutinizing every last one. She picked up a box of kotex and stared it down… then she looked at the coupon… then scowled back at the kotex… then glared at the coupon…

“Are these boxes travel size?”
“Um, I don’t think so. They’re not with the travel items, they’re on the shelf with the other Kotex.”
“…Mmhmm.”
“And I’ve used the coupon for that item at this store before.”
“… …Oh yeah?”

Still unconvinced, she felt the need to yell to the cashier two registers over, “Hey, are these travel sized?” To which, the other cashier answered with a half-hearted shrug.

So, she rang up the coupons and then stopped at the Almay. Again, stared at the coupon… stared at the items… gave me a skeptical look like I was giving her a hard time on purpose… and then finally rang up the coupon. The rest of the coupons she scanned without too much incident.

Final total? I paid off my prescription and still ended up getting $2.07 overage back. Awwww yeah!

And I promise I’m done shopping at Walmart for the time being. I’ll save any new moneymakers for next month’s prescription. 😉

Not sure when I’ll be dragging my butt to the grocery store this week. I’ll be busy sorting through all of my Earthly possessions, so I can sell them for pennies on the dollar at a yard sale next week. Fun!

Hey, you’ve joined the Coupon Shopping Club, right? If you post your shopping trip, you could win the $100 grand prize! And somebody’s going to win a $50 prize just for entering!

I’ll be there, being classy, as usual. Come share your stories with us! 🙂

Right now all the slow cooking is done by our nameless mammoth of a crockpot. She’s a seasoned pro, but sadly, on her last legs. Once it’s time for her to retire, it’ll be Norma’s turn to run the kitchen. 😉
